The weather is starting to sizzle, so vacation season must be here! Whether you are moving back up north for the summer to escape the heat or visiting family for a long weekend, you need to safeguard your home while you are away. • Unplug all non-essential appliances to help prevent electrical fires. This includes clocks, televisions, computers, lamps, toasters, etc. An added bonus to unplugging is saving on your electricity bill while you are away.

• Nothing screams “unoccupied home” to a vandal more than a pile of packages sitting outside your front door. Make sure to cancel your newspapers and forward or hold your mail while you are gone. A couple weeks before leaving, stop ordering packages to help prevent them from arriving while you are out of town. In addition, make sure to tell a neighbor you will be traveling and ask them to pick up any packages, flyers or other materials that do arrive while you are gone.

• If possible, turn off the water main to your home before leaving. Water damage is one of the most common and most costly repairs that we see. If there is a burst or leaky pipe while you are away, not only will you be repairing the water damage, you will also be remediating the mold damage, which many insurance companies don’t cover.

• If you will be gone for an extended period of time, prepare your home for a hurricane. Close your hurricane shutters (if you have them), take in any outdoor furniture or objects that could become projectiles, and tie down any large objects that you can’t move. A hurricane can obliterate your home in a matter of minutes and it is far better to complete the prep work in case one comes than have to deal with the aftermath.

• Also, if you will be away for an extended period, give a friend or family member a key to your home and ask them to periodically check on it to make sure there are no signs of a break-in, water damage, or any other major structural damage that needs immediate attention.
