My Home Was Damaged. Should I Make a Claim to My Insurance Company?

Over time, parts of a home can break or malfunction – roofs leak, toilets overflow – the list of possibilities that can go wrong is endless. If something like this happens, should you call your homeowners insurance company to reimburse you for the costs associated with repairing the damage or replacing it if it is unsalvageable? After all, isn’t that what you are paying for when you pay your premium each month? The answer is not so clear-cut.

Determine the Cause of the Problem

Your homeowners insurance only covers damages that are sudden and unexpected. It does not cover damage from normal wear and tear or from lack of maintenance. For example, if you have a leaky roof from a tree branch hitting your home, that would be eligible for coverage, but if your roof leaks because it is too old and needs to be replaced, that is not covered. If you are unsure what caused the damage you are experiencing in your home, call a professional to inspect it and determine the cause. If you make a claim and the insurance company determines that the cause is not covered by your insurance, they will not cover it.

Contact a Public Adjuster to Handle Major Claims

If you experienced a catastrophic or major loss that you believe is covered by your insurance, your first step should be to call a public adjuster, like Get Paid For Your Claim. We will analyze your insurance policy to have a clear understanding of what is covered. Then, we will come to your home to inspect the damage. We will contact your insurance company for you to file the claim and provide the insurance company with a line-item inventory of damages and the associated repair costs. Allowing Get Paid For Your Claim to contact the insurance company instead of doing it yourself helps prevent communication errors that lead to claim denials. We will even attend the walk-through when the insurance company adjuster visits your home to ensure that they account for all the damage. We are by your side the entire time until the insurance company sends your compensation.

Avoid Making Minor Claims

You should never make a claim for damages that are less than your deductible; the insurance company will not pay you for them. If the damages are slightly above your deductible, ask yourself if you can manage it without the insurance coverage. Insurance companies sometimes drop customers who make claims too frequently. If you are unsure whether or not you should make a claim, contact Get Paid For Your Claim for expert advice.

Insurance companies have their own team of experts and insurance adjusters to advocate on their behalf.  At Get Paid For Your Claim, weadvocate for you.  As a licensed and bonded Public Adjuster, we help insurance policyholders who have been forced to use insurance to make a claim.

Our service is fast and to the point.  We get results.  We know how to strategically move the process along, while negotiating on our clients’ behalf toward the best possible outcome — the maximum settlement available.

The earlier a public adjuster is brought into the process, the better the opportunity to help you obtain a more favorable claim settlement.
